The ancients and today are all fond of coral reefs like flowers. Coral reef, also known as the “sea tropical rainforest”, is one of the oldest ecosystems on the planet. Under the blue sea in Sanya, Hainan, there is a beautiful submarine tropical rain forest. A cluster of coral communities are connected in series, and as the current flows gently, the fish swims in the meantime.

What is the current status of Sanya coral reef protection? What are the problems? Recently, China Ocean News reporter participated in the 2015 Haijiang Miles Interview organized by the State Oceanic Administration, and entered the Hainan Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve to explore the story behind the protection of coral reefs.

Establish a protected area for coral reefs

“The coral reef is an important cornerstone of the Earth's marine life chain. About half of the world's marine fish for human consumption are located near coral reefs. The coral reef ecosystem plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of the ocean's ecology.” Sanya Coral Reef Nature Fu Jie, director of the Sanctuary Management Office, told reporters that as early as the 1970s and 1980s, due to human activities and natural environment, Sanya's coral reef ecosystem was seriously degraded. In September 1990, the Sanao Coral Reef National Nature Reserve, the first national-level marine ecological type coral reef protection area, came into being. The total area of ​​the reserve is 85 square kilometers. There are Yalong Bay Coral Reef Protection Station, Dadonghai Coral Reef Protection Station, Luhuitou Bay Coral Reef Protection Station and East and West Weizhou Coral Reef Protection Station. The main protection targets are reef-building corals and non-reef-building corals. Coral reefs and their ecosystems and biodiversity.

Wang Junjie, deputy director of the Sanya Coral Reef Nature Reserve Management Office, said that there are currently more than 110 species of reef-building corals, 131 species of phytoplankton, 80 species of zooplankton, 296 species of fish, and endangered species such as crickets, green turtles and Chinese sturgeons in the protected areas. As an important part of the Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve, will the prosperity of Xizhou's tourism industry have a major impact on the marine ecosystem, especially if the highly respected diving activities will cause damage to the coral reef ecosystem?

"According to relevant national laws and regulations, the protected area has issued the "Hainan Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve Protection and Development Plan" and eco-tourism plan. Based on the principle of moderate development, we have carried out moderate eco-tourism development in the experimental area, and Has achieved remarkable results." Wang Junjie told reporters that before the development of eco-tourism, illegal activities such as the exploitation of coral reefs and fish frying in the protected areas often occur. For example, Ke Xiaowen, head of the Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve Project Office, said that the fishermen of the West Island had lived on fishing for generations. In recent years, with economic development and population increase, overfishing has caused great damage to the marine ecosystem of the surrounding waters. . The development of tourism has brought new opportunities for local fishermen to switch jobs. Now most of the fishermen on the island have joined the ranks of ecotourism development.

Put up the "firewall" and put on the "golden bell"

Although the Sanya coral reef protection work has achieved remarkable results, it still faces many challenges. Fu Jie said frankly that the current protection of coral reefs in Sanya is still not optimistic. With the development of economy and society, the threat posed by environmental pollution is the main reason for destroying the coral reef ecosystem. Land-based pollutant discharge, offshore engineering construction, overfishing, and illegal Environmental degradation caused by mining corals and other impacts on coral reefs is far greater than climate change. In the long run, the destruction of the marine environment is very detrimental to the continued development of marine tourism and the protection of coral reefs. Only by constantly improving the protection system and increasing the cost of illegal activities can we avoid or reduce the damage to the marine ecological environment.

In July this year, Hainan's first large-scale coastal zone special inspection was launched in an all-round way to find out the protection and development of the coastal zone and provide strong support for Hainan's implementation of “multi-regulation”. In fact, for a long time, due to historical reasons and other related reasons, the coastal zone, which is called “the most valuable place in Hainan”, has been well developed, and there are also some cases of cheap, extensive, and unreasonable development.
